Club History

The Birman Cat Club of Canberra Inc. has been active in the ACT since 1980. The Club is governed by a constitution, its aims being to promote the Birman cat and ensure its viability for the future.

Following the introduction of the first Birmans to Canberra, local owners got together and decided to form a Club with the aim of helping each other establish this breed in Canberra. Thirteen people attended the first Birman Cat Club of Canberra meeting held on August 10th 1980 and since then the club has continued to grow, with members from all states of Australia in addition to our international members from New Zealand, South Africa and Europe.

The Club held its first Birman Specialist Show in 1983, and in 2007, celebrated its 25th Anniversary Show. The Club also conducts a large championship all breeds cat show, creating a huge show weekend on the third weekend in May each year. The Club have welcomed many international judges to Canberra over this time, several making return trips to enjoy Canberra and the great Aussie line up of cats that compete each year, who come from almost every state and Territory in Australia.
